BYU vs. Boston College- A day with Scott
So I’ve decided to blog a game of BYU football. I’ve always wanted to do this so I’ve taken care of all my chores for the day so I can relay what it’s like to watch a BYU football game with Scott. I am taking care of Aubree for portions of the game so the TIVO will be put into play.
I’ve told Becky I was going to do this, but I’m not sure she’s completely on board. She has Super Saturday this morning and I’ll be watching Aubree during the beginning of the game. I did the dishes this morning to buy some extra brownie points. We’ll see how it plays out.
10:00 BYU-BC It’s time for the start of the game. BYU will receive to start the game. They need to get off to a quick start, eliminate turnovers and penalties and I think they can win this game.
10:03 Aubree is already struggling. Trying to pump her up with the BYU cheer just isn’t working. She has a runny nose and a cold. I think Super Saturday needs to hurry up. Here’s hoping that she can get distracted by something else.
10:10 BYU 7 BC 0 John Beck scores on a one yard QB sneak. The whole drive was runs and short passes. They looked pretty sharp. Encouraging start.
10:13 BC fumbles on their first play of the game and BYU recovers. It’s a close call, but the replays confirm that it was a good call. BYU needs to score a touchdown now.
10:14 BYU fumbles on their first play, but Harline is able to recover it. Two BC players should have had it but choked.
10:16 BYU has two penalties, Beck misses a wide-open Collie in the end zone on a third down pass, and then they miss a 49 yard field goal. Missed opportunity. Big time.
10:24 BC is three and out on their next possession. BYU defense is looking pretty solid.
10:28 Score update: Cincinnati 7 #1 Ohio St. 3 at the end of the first quarter. Interesting. This is familiar territory for college football. Some games will tease you and tease you and then the team that is supposed to win pulls it out in the end. Happens all the time and will happen with this particular game. I guarantee it.
10:38 BC gets a 79 yard long bomb to the BYU 6 yard line. BYU defensive back was major toatst.
10:41 BYU 7 BC 6 BC scores on a two yard run, but misses the extra point. That’s a good omen for BYU.
10:45 End of First Quarter- BYU 7 BC 6 Another score of note: Iowa St. is leading #16 Iowa 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. This wouldn’t be too big of an upset as this is a huge rivalry game.
10:51 Another three and out for BC including a QB sack by BYU. Except for one play the defense has been solid.
11:00 BYU converts on a 42 yard field goal for a 10-6 lead. But more importantly Becky just got home so Aubree has some company.
11:07 Another three and out for BC. BYU has got to get another score.
11:14 BYU kicks a 50 yard field goal to take a 13-6 lead. Field goals are nice but touchdowns make me feel better. Doesn’t BYU ever consider my feelings?
11:25 BC all the sudden figures out that they can pass the ball on BYU and they take it down for a touchdown. Ben Criddle intercepts a pass in the end zone, but the receiver knocks it out of his hands. On the next play BC scores. However they botch the extra point again and it’s BYU 13 BC 12. Missing extra points can cost a team. We’ll see if it matters or not.
11:26 BYU has 3:22 before half time. Let’s see if they can generate a score.
11:29 Beck throws an interception. His first of the year.
11:30 BYU returns the favor by intercepting BC.
11:32 Halftime: BYU 13 BC 12. BYU has outplayed BC, but haven’t converted on all of its opportunities. It feels similar to the Arizona game. The offense has got to get touchdowns instead of field goals. The defense needs to keep playing well. I’ve been impressed with them.
Score updates:
#1 Ohio St. 13 Cincinnati 7 Halftime
Look for Ohio St. to blow them out in the second half.
Iowa St. 14 #16 Iowa 10 Halftime
This one will go down to the wire.
12:00 BC receives kickoff and returns it into BYU territory. Defense holds BC to a three and out.
12:03 Low snap causes Beck to fumble. BC recovers. Not good.
12:15 BC drives down for a touchdown. They convert on the two point conversion to take a 20-13 lead. The BYU offense needs to answer.
12:18 BYU goes three and out. The momentum is definitely shifting to BC.
Score updates:
#1 Ohio St. 20 Cincinatti 7 End of third quarter
Iowa St. 17 #16 Iowa 17 End of third quarter
12:20 BYU defense holds, but they are pinned down on their 4 yard line after the punt. BYU has got to get it going on offense.
12:39 End of third quarter: BC 20 BYU 13 BYU is driving and on the BC 6 yard line. They can’t settle for a field goal.
12:40 Fui Vakapuna scores on a 6 yard pass to cap a 96 yard drive and the extra point is good. Tie game at 20. It’s nervous time.
12:48 BC settles for a field goal after a nice drive. The BYU defense held nicely when it had to. BC 23 BYU 20. It’s time for a touchdown.
12:58 BYU gets down to a first and goal situation, but can’t punch it in. They settle for another field goal. 6:33 left in the game and we’re tied at 23. Here’s the point where I start pacing.
Score Updates:

1:08 TURNOVER!!!! BC fumbles and BYU recovers with 4:47 left in the game. This is BYU’s game to lose.
1:15 BYU 44 yard field goal hits the upright and is no good. 2:53 left in the game and BC has the ball. This game has Arizona written all over it. I’m sick to my stomach right now.
1:18 BYU holds BC and forces them to punt. BYU gets the ball back on their 10 yard line with 1:32 left in the game. For all the crap that John Beck gets this is his chance to shut up the naysayers. All they need to do is drive for a field goal. They have 3 timeouts left.
1:20 BYU goes three and out and has to punt. They gain three total yards. BC fumbles the ball but BC recovers. 50 seconds left and BYU has to hold.
1:22 INTERCEPTION!!! BYU has the ball back with 20 seconds left and two timeouts. They are on their own 45 yard line. They need about 20 yards to get into field goal range.
1:30 BYU gets down to the 35 yard line with 8 seconds left. 52 yard field goal attempt coming up to win the game.
1:31 No good. Not even close. Overtime here we come. BYU played two overtime games last year and lost them both. Let’s hope they can change the trend.
1:35 BYU starts with the ball. BC played a double overtime game last week so they’ve been here before.
1:42 BYU can’t score a touchdown and then a bad snap ends any field goal chance. It’s now or never for the defense. They have to hold and hope for BC to miss a field goal.
1:45 BYU stuffs them on three plays and now BC has a 39 yard field goal to win the game. Keep in mind that this kicker has missed two extra points today.
1:46 NO GOOD! BYU deflects the kick and it’s short. Double Overtime.
1:48 BC starts with the ball this time.
1:49 BC scores on the first play of overtime. Extra point is good. BC leads 30-23. BYU’s ball.
1:55 John Beck has a tipped pass that looks to be intercepted. The official rules it incomplete. After further review the replay official overrules the call and says its an interception. It’s the right call. Game over and BYU loses 30-23.
I have mixed emotions about John Beck. The Boston College loss was not his fault, but it seemed like they had chances to make plays late in the game and it just didn't happen. Unfortunately for Beck he plays against the ghosts of quarterbacks past. They all have lead BYU to victories while trailing late in the game. Truth is that Beck has done that once, but has had numerous other opportunities.
He has a losing record as a starting quarterback and has lost numerous close games. Unless he pulls off some miracles late in the season, I think he'll have a tarnished legacy. One of BYU's best statistical quarterbacks, but no conference championships, comeback wins, or bowl game wins to hang his hat on. The BC loss wasn't his fault, but somehow it feels like it is. That's not fair to John Beck, but thats the price you pay being the starting quarterback.
The defense played great. They gave up a couple of big plays, but came up with timely turnovers and played solidly. I'm very encouraged by this group. I think the have exceeded their expectations while the offense has underperformed.
BYU just needs to put this loss behind them and move on. Look for them to take it out on Utah St. this Saturday. My prediction is 42-7.

Post Game Analysis
I have to admit that I'm pretty frustrated after this loss. This was very similar to the Arizona game where BYU had outplayed their opponent, but lost the game. The bright spot for BYU is that they play Utah St. next week (which they will annihilate) and then their MWC schedule. The MWC is down this year and BYU's toughest two games will be TCU and Utah which are both on the road. I think BYU beats Utah St. and goes 6-2 in conference for an overall record of 8-4. I thought they would win 9 games this year.I have mixed emotions about John Beck. The Boston College loss was not his fault, but it seemed like they had chances to make plays late in the game and it just didn't happen. Unfortunately for Beck he plays against the ghosts of quarterbacks past. They all have lead BYU to victories while trailing late in the game. Loved it. And as someone who can't watch the games (almost caught it at the hospital, but ESPN2 had regional coverage and it was PAC 10 game), I almost felt like I was seeing the game for myself.
And, yeah, talk about frustrating. Beck certainly has the skills, but I don't know if he's the kind of QB that can LEAD the team to a win.
We watched the end of the game, it was hard to watch. I was so hopeful that they would win. Alisa Allred & her hubby Nathan went to the game, Nathan's brother plays on the team. I think it was a pretty rough game.
It was a disappointing game for sure. A couple of key secondary breakdowns and missed opportunities by the offense. I think Beck is a decent quarterback. He continues to throw behind receivers and over receivers, though. He isn't a playmaker like Detmer, so he needs to focus on execution. He also has a tendency to telegraph his direction of throw. Look off a little more often.
A look on the brightside: the cougs went into a ranked opposing team's stadium, and could have won on the road. Instead, they only lose in a second OT. Not bad. It's not all about the W's.
